project investment incubation and implementation
There is a growing interest from international mining companies, jewellers, electronics and automotive manufacturers, and cosmetics companies that use raw materials to ensure that their sourcing strategies are not contributing to environmental or social problems. Beyond that are pioneering organisations who see further than social and environmental compliance to recognise the business opportunity in new, environmentally benign and socially inclusive economies.
We are passionate about building successful social enterprises, whether they are NGOs, for-profit firms or multi-sector initiatives and projects. We bring the full strength of our strategy and management consulting skills, technical and subject matter expertise, and fundraising and marketing experience to assist our clients reach their goals and aspirations to deliver:
- Project and social enterprise conceptualisation and design and business case;
- Business financial modelling;
- Marketing and business development strategies;
- Project management and oversight;
- Stakeholder and multi-party initiative convening and facilitation.
Our collaborative approach and the impacts of our far-reaching skill-set is best demonstrated by our current work with Fairtrade International and Comic Relief
Photographer Ian Berry documents a visceral story with images that take us from Uganda’s makeshift goldmines to a London jeweller’s, documenting how this programme is helping to end the exploitation, mercury poisoning and treacherous conditions faced by Africa’s small-scale miners.
The Impact Facility for Sustainable Mining Communities (The Facility) is an investment platform designed and managed by The Dragonfly Initiative. Through it we are bringing together technical specialists, project implementers, funders and downstream commodity buyers to develop projects that demonstrate a financially sustainable mechanism to invest in the socio-economic development of mining communities around the world. Seed capital has already been committed by Comic Relief and Fairtrade for trial projects and to devise the funding scheme.
TDI is proud to be working with Fairtrade, Comic Relief and the Dutch development bank FMO on this important project. We carried out feasibility studies, designed the investment model and are currently attracting many more investors and donors to partner with The Facility, to connect mines with finance on fair terms, equitable gold markets, and technical assistance. We arranged the first pilots for the scheme in collaboration with Fairtrade Africa, Solidaridad, Philips and Fairphone and will be carrying out assessments at nine sites around the Lake Victoria region of East Africa, with plans to expand the scope to additional mines in 2018. By 2020 The Facility aims to have leveraged over $4 million of investment to support similar projects across the Global South.

We have worked with The Dragonfly Initiative now for three years and their ability to help us build a viable business model for our gold programme that combines impact with long term sustainability, has been extremely valuable. The company has an extraordinary agility, flexibility and breadth of knowledge.

TDI is currently incubating:
An ethical jewellery line made from fully traceable gold nuggets;
A start-up for the first circular-economy tablet
Historical track record
Spartacus Capital Mining Fund, London
This start-up private equity vehicle’s strategy was to invest in responsible junior mining in Africa and to demonstrate that partnering with resource companies to manage their Environmental Social and Governance (ESG) risk, win a social license to operate, and include host communities in the benefits of mineral development is strongly aligned with superior investment returns. We built their ESG policy, strategy framework and due diligence protocols.
Althelia Ecosphere, London
The founders and managing partners reached out to TDI for help to develop the ESG strategy and policy for this innovative fund management platform investing in forest carbon and sustainable and certified commodity production. Althelia invests in projects that reduce deforestation, mitigate climate change, protect biodiversity and provide a fair and sustainable living to rural communities, whilst offering investors a fair return on capital. TDI continues to provide the due diligence, capacity development and performance assessment services for the business to ensure their investments deliver a win-win for communities and investors.
